[ he glances up and around, blinking at the others with sleep still making his eyes heavy lidded, looking to the other gladers and grey. welp, he's eating his, must be okay. ]
Who did the eggs? [ he mumbles the question, part of his hair flattened from the pillow and the other fluffed up at odd angles. he turns to squint at minho, who is only turning in his sleep and doesn't seem to actually be getting up. ] Did you poison them?
[ which is a joke, because he's already picking off the shell of his, making a neat little pile of the fragments and digging in with an 'mmm'. freshly boiled eggs, ugh, yes. ]
[ Grey lifts his hand at the first question, and rolls his eyes hard at the second.
The last time he'd seen New Year eggs (actually not that long ago), they'd been wrong. They'd had bullets inside. Grey's come without the added surprise. ]
[ Grey gives him a tiny smile, and shakes his head. Then he gets up, goes to get a calendar, and comes back. It's turned to January. He nods to the remains of the egg, and then taps the square for January 1st.
They're New Year eggs, see?
It was hard to record time, on Snowpiercer. The Tail had no windows, so they could never see where they were. But every year, on the anniversary of the train's beginning, eggs were brought to every carriage. Even to the back, to celebrate another year that the Train had kept the human race alive. Grey doesn't know if their new year was the same as this one, if it was on January 1st. It probably wasn't. But he'll celebrate it in the usual way, all the same. ]
